One can even walk to the island from nearby cities of Whakatane, Tauranga and Rotorua. Visiting the island is termed to be an extraordinary experience in all respects.
Remains of Sulphur mining
Tourists are surprised to visit the remains of the sulphur mining operation. Prior to the year 1914, quite a few attempts were done to mine sulphur on this island. However, in the year 1914, the mining came to an abrupt halt as the mudslide killed all the workers. These workers suddenly disappeared leaving no trace. This mudslide was survived only by the camp cat.
